Music History- January 4

Did you know that on this day in 1950, RCA Victor announced that it would manufacture long-playing (LP) records. These were 33 1/3 rpm, 12" records. Up until this point there were a few record formats being produced (78, 45 and 33 1/3 rpm). The LP's gained in popularity. Performers took advantage of the longer playing time on the LP's to create coherent themes or concept albums. The LP has remained the standard format for vinyl albums.
