String Instrument Care

We are often asked how to care for a new student's string instrument. Here are a few simple tips to keep your string instrument in top shape.

Basic String Instrument Care

  1. NEVER place an instrument face down, lying on the bridge. When setting down a violin or viola, place the instrument on its back. Cellos should be placed on their side. Use a stand or keep your instrument in its case when not in use.

  2. Always hold the bow at the bottom or by the stick only. DO NOT touch the bow hair.

  3. Wipe down the instrument, strings, and bow stick with a microfiber polishing cloth after playing to remove rosin dust, oil and dirt.

  4. Remember to loosen the bow when you are done playing, to prevent the stick from warping and wearing out the bow hair faster.

  5. Remember to remove the shoulder rest from violins and violas when putting them away to prevent damage to the instrument.

  6. Never leave your instrument in an extreme environment. Excessive heat, cold, humidity and dryness are all damaging to a wood string instrument.

  7. If you suspect a maintenance issue consult a qualified luthier to ensure it keeps playing at its best.
